Considerations for Voluntary Dam Removal

When hydro project asset owners with aging facilities weigh the choice of investing in modernization or in decommissioning, there are policy implications, as well as legal and regulatory considerations to explore. Every situation is unique — what works in one case may not in another.

In this session, participants will hear from experts on what legal and regulatory standards currently apply to a voluntary dam removal. Experts will also discuss emerging policies at both the federal and state levels that would influence an asset owner’s decision on whether to seek dam removal. A case study on dam removal will be explored, so that participants can understand how fully exploring the risks, benefits, and consequences is the first step in sound decision-making.
